{"id":98,"date":"2011-07-08T16:14:24","date_gmt":"2011-07-08T23:14:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.chrisbenesh.com\/currents\/?p=98"},"modified":"2011-07-08T18:17:56","modified_gmt":"2011-07-09T01:17:56","slug":"the-end-of-an-era","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.chrisbenesh.com\/currents\/2011\/07\/08\/the-end-of-an-era\/","title":{"rendered":"The end of an era"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Well, let&#8217;s see. \u00a0Back on April 10, 1981, I got up really early in the morning so I could watch CNN&#8217;s coverage of the very first flight of the space shuttle\u00a0<em>Columbia<\/em>. \u00a0After waiting anxiously for hours, the launch was scrubbed in the final seconds of the countdown. \u00a0Two days later, I was up early again to watch in awe as <em>Columbia<\/em> lifted off the launch pad for the very first time. \u00a0Later, when I was in college at UCSB, I would hear the double sonic booms as shuttles re-entered the atmosphere off the coast of southern California on their way to Edwards Air Force Base. \u00a0I remember attending a\u00a0monthly meeting\u00a0of the Santa Barbara Audubon Society that featured\u00a0Lodewijk Van Den Berg, a veteran\u00a0<em>Challenger<\/em> payload specialist. \u00a0He gave us an up close and personal look at the life of a shuttle astronaut, and what it was like to live and work in a weightless environment. \u00a0In his talk, he touched on the astronaut&#8217;s awareness of the risks involved in space flight. \u00a0Less than a week later, I watched as\u00a0<em>Challenger<\/em>\u00a0exploded 73 seconds into its flight and the world got to see what he meant first hand. \u00a0The shuttle program was a great success and it wasn&#8217;t until years later that the program suffered its only other catastrophic loss, the disintegration of <em>Columbia <\/em>on re-entry in 2003.<\/p>\n<p>In those early years before shuttles routinely returned to Earth in Florida, I had a couple of occasions to see shuttles piggy-backed atop NASA 747s while they stopped for refueling in Tucson on their way back to Florida. \u00a0Now it is 30 years later, and I just finished watching the final launch of <em>Atlantis<\/em>, mission \u00a0STS-135 live on my iPad 2. \u00a0Sadly, I never got to see a launch in person (though I did at least manage a peak at a shuttle on the launch pad on a visit to Florida). \u00a0A young boy during the Apollo days of astronauts setting foot on the moon, space exploration has always fascinated me. \u00a0I will miss seeing them streak over in the night sky.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_101\" style=\"width: 874px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.chrisbenesh.com\/currents\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Columbia-in-Tucson1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-101\" class=\"size-full wp-image-101\" title=\"Columbia in Tucson\" src=\"http:\/\/www.chrisbenesh.com\/currents\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Columbia-in-Tucson1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"864\" height=\"572\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.chrisbenesh.com\/currents\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Columbia-in-Tucson1.jpg 864w, https:\/\/www.chrisbenesh.com\/currents\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Columbia-in-Tucson1-300x198.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 864px) 100vw, 864px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-101\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The space shuttle Columbia arrives in Tucson.
